2020 vision

Today is probably the last of my busy days, but it's not a guarantee. I could very well end up busy through the weekend so today, while I have just a few minutes, rather than post a regular feature, I'll leave you all with a question:

Is 2020 the 'start of the next decade', or does the decade begin next year?

I will weigh in on this chronological conundrum after reading your replies. But either way, the one thing we can all agree on is that 1/1/2020 WAS the start of the new year, so....

I'll see you all as soon as I can find the time to resume posting.

  1. I'm not really qualified to answer that question KD as I haven't even bee keeping track of my own age for years now !
Wishing you a great 2020 or whatever it is.

  2. 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade. I wonder if it will be "The Roaring 20's" again.

  3. I remember this debate coming up big time in 2000, and the debate was about whether 2000 represented a new century, or did we have to wait 'til 2001. My view is that technically, for those who construct calendars and agree on their conventions, the decade probably does start on 1/1/21. But, since meaning is also a function of convention, I treat 1/1/20 as the start of the new decade, and I think that's fine. The best analogy I've seen is to floors in a hotel. Is the lobby level floor 1? Or, is that the lobby and Floor 1 is the floor immediately above the ground floor, i.e. the second story of the building?

  5. 2020 is the final year of the second decade of the third millennium. I also agree with sissy snow, every day is the start of a new decade (10 yrs).
