Easterless

While I found this meme pretty darned funny, here it's not a joke. I did formally cancel Easter for our usual crowd for this year......at least for now. Many of you know we usually do quite a table each year along with a traditional Polish menu and annual backyard egg hunt. None of that is happening this year. ( I even added two sets of pretty pink Depression glass candlestick holders to our collection, and now they aren't even going to be used.)

Besides the candlestick holders, I also bought gold flatware for this year to match my mother's antique china. Oh well.

An old shot of a past Easter Table. Since these were taken, the table setting has grown to include matching chargers.

I suppose I could have just canceled visitors and still decorated and then done the traditional meal for just the four of us here, but that just didn't sit right with me. So I just called everyone a while back, made the announcement and then proceeded to do nothing I usually do. The house is not decorated at all. No eggs have been colored. I didn't bake a lamb cake, and we will not use the usual china for tonight's dinner.......although we will be having the ham I bought......but not with anything else I usually make it with.

The weather is pretty nice here in NJ today, so I have been re-potting some of my succulents, and Rosa is not feeling well either, though she has no fever. Still, I am a little concerned. But if whatever is coursing through her is the virus, she seems to be in the very, very mild end of the spectrum.

To be honest, all of this has taken a bit of an emotional toll on me, but I know it was the right decision.....especially given how my Honey is right now. Had we had guests......including my pregnant daughter, this would have been horrible.

  1. I'm making my traditional Easter meal minus the dessert, for dinner tonight. I have to go out tomorrow to get my meds at the pharmacy, so I'll buy some (hopefully) discounted chocolates as well.

The kids downstairs had some sort of Easter celebration. I heard it through the window, so I'm glad they had it. Now if only their dog was nice like my Donna I'd be happier.

    1. Noisy neighbors are a real pain. I hope the meal went well and you find your chocolates.

    2. They aren't noisy, they're WONDERFUL! Best neighbors I've (we've) had since I married Shilo. Their dog is an aggressive bitch which is why I dislike her so much.

  2. Any idea why it didn't sit right to have a dinner just for family but with all the trimmings? My reaction to ours was kind of the opposite. We don't go as all-out as you, but it was a small even this year. Just our immediate family and one of the kid's significant other. No extended family, which usually includes my in-laws and sometimes one or more of my wife's siblings. A smaller, quieter event was much more to my liking.

    1. Easter for me has integral associations with certain foods and activities that are essentially there to enjoy with a group of particular people. Subtract those people from the equation and the rest becomes not only pointless, but practically an affront to the spirit of the day. I would not have even been able to have immediate family this year, or even all of my steps. Out of everyone, ironically, the two who were here have the least interest in anything traditional or holiday-oriented. And as things turned out with Rosa, it worked out better than if we had forced it.
