Harris?

I couldn't do it any better myself, thanks Simon.

While this warrants a full post, for now let me just say that back in 2015 I said, "anybody but Hilary".  When Biden was mulling over choices of women of color I said, "anybody but Harris". Way to go, you idiot Democrats. I haven't voted Democratic in years but Trump has to go. Thanks for making the choice to vote for Biden that much harder. Four more years of the "Lying Shitbag" anyone?

  1. No way! I'm delighted with his choice, and I've gotten flooded by emails and texts from friends and family who are charged up about it.

    1. It does not surprise me that you like the choice, and this is not a shot, but of the people you mentioned, yourself included, how many were on-the-fence voters from swing states? How many were somewhat disappointed with Trump, but reluctant to go with Biden, and were waiting to see who the VP would be given Biden's age, and then, with the announcement of Harris, said "woo hoo! That does it for me! Biden-Harris 2020 all the way!" ? If the answer is several, I might change my mind.

Harris may have qualifications, but to use them one first has to be elected.

    2. The answer is almost all were technically from a "swing state," since we live in one, though it is trending from purple to blue these days. Were many of them on the fence between Trump and Biden? No, but I don't know many who are at this point. And, would the people who are have been more persuaded and exhilarated by Karen Bass? Unknown outside CA and gave a pretty weak performance on the Sunday news programs. Not clear to me what she would have added. Stacy Abrams - great future but probably as a governor, not VP at this stage. Susan Rice -- total disaster in the making. No political experience, no domestic policy experience, and would have energized the R's in very unhelpful ways. Tammy Duckworth? Great personal story but did anyone really see her as a future president? Warren? Too old, and certainly would not have brought around swing voters.

And, I think you have the liability issue on Harris exactly wrong. It's not her inability to appeal to swing, "on the fence" voters -- it's her lack of appeal to those on the hard left who are going to have a hard time voting for a former prosecutor.

    3. While it's nice to be right, there are actually several issues/times where I WANT to be wrong. When people told me I was wrong in my objection to Hilary as the 2016 candidate.....I wanted to be wrong. When people tell me my atheist views are wrong and there is a loving deity waiting for me in a blissful afterlife.....I WANT to be wrong. And, with this I want to be wrong also.

I think Tammy Duckworth was the one he should have went with.

As for the reaction? Well, just turn to FOX News. They are loving this choice! As I said, when I have some time I will do a more detailed analysis. But again, you might be right.....and I hope you are. I have nothing to gain from being right on this one!

    4. I suspect that Fox would be purporting to absolutely love whomever Biden picked. He could have picked Ivanka and Trump would be crowing about how great it will be to run against her. I suspect he was really hoping for Karen Bass, because her comments on Castro likely would have tipped Florida.

I do admit, I feel stung by how mis-aligned my views on Hillary were in terms of how it actually turned out. But, Hillary also had been the victim of years of obsessive negative coverage by Fox and every talk radio host out there. I'm not sure that's true with Harris or that they have as much to work with. I do think it is an inherently risky choice in one way, namely that it isn't clear how many people out there won't vote for a woman or won't vote for a black woman simply because racism is still alive and well among whites and misogyny is alive and well including among women. But, I don't think that can mean he should have gone with a man or a non-black woman. First, that just concedes the status quo will stay the status quo. Second, at the end of the day Biden owed the entire existence of his campaign to the black female electorate who saved his ass in South Carolina and reversed his trajectory. Bottom line is he owed them, and he also absolutely cannot win if he doesn't turn out black voters at levels similar to Obama's turnout. That would have been impossible had he chosen Duckworth.

    5. My view is that relying on the Black Vote is a losing strategy and should be abandoned in favor of attracting swing voters.....who actually show up and vote for SOMEONE, to vote for your person and not for the other. It's simple math. Red states will end up red, blue ones blue. Every time you attract a swing voter you not only add to your tally but subtract from the other. The Black vote is not and never will go to Trump, so even if you manage to get them to show up, which they very well may not do Harris or not......you are taking nothing away from Trump's tally. If 2 people are going to vote for Biden and two for Trump and you get lucky and the Black vote decides to show up that day, It may be Biden 3 to Trump 2, but if you convince one of Trump's people to vote for Biden and the Black voter stays home, it's Biden 3 to Trump's 1.

    2. Julie, I'm shocked. Heels up is a problem? For you? Since when? It's OK for Don to stick it in everything that moves, but if Kamala has some fun it's a badge of shame? Sorry, it just makes me like her even more, if for no other reason than all the "pearl clutching" I'm going to see from women on your side of the political fence in the coming months, most of whom had no problem whatsoever with Trump's sexual escapades.

  3. Evolution is how I look at it. Those who have the money to run are not what we are use to. I do not look at "First", "History Making" this is not important. Harris has the experience, she showed it during the Presidential Debates, she has the education, so who cares if Harris is Female, Black, I sure do not care. Biden has experience, I'm not a person who votes for a Racist, Sexist, Disrespectful, Arrogant and so on individual, so know what Trump was like long before he ran for office and having it proven since he has been in office, I see Harris as the Light at the End of the Tunnel, I see Biden and Harris working as a Team. Let Bring Back America Again, Trump has taken it away, so onward to a better future. Jack

    1. As I will state in a more detailed post later on, Democrats have a knack for picking candidates that appeal tremendously to the folks who are going to vote Democratic no matter what. What they can't seem to accomplish is choosing people who take away from the other side.

The ironies just keep coming. ;-)

  4. Dan why are "sexual excapades" only a problem with some people and not others. We have had other divorced presidents, Billy boy had affairs all over including in the White house. Biden has been accused and no one is even looking into it. Never mind Kennedy and Eisenhower.

    1. Joe, I don’t disagree there should be one standard, but the facts to which that standard is applied is pretty important. First, as far as I know, there is only one allegation that involves alleged sexual assault, and that accuser’s story seems to have totally fallen apart at this point. Don’t take my word for it. There’s been pretty extensive examination of it. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/12/us/politics/joe-biden-tara-reade-sexual-assault-complaint.html. To my knowledge, the other allegations out there were about conduct that the women found “inappropriate” or that made them feel “uncomfortable,” and nothing remotely close to sexual assault. And, certainly no payoffs to porn stars or bragging about grabbing them by the pussy. That’s one of the not so subtle points that Trump’s supporters always seem to miss — Joe Biden denies the one allegation of sexual assault, while Trump loudly proclaimed grabbing women by the pussy and the proof of him paying off a porn star is irrefutable. As is the fact he lied about the latter.

Second, I agree with you on Clinton, though I actually do NOT think what he did was OK. Even with Monica, while it may have been consensual, as the father of someone barely over 20 I certainly don’t think it was appropriate for the “most powerful man in the world” to use that stature to get into the pants of 20 year-old intern. The power dynamic is simply too unequal.

But, there is certainly no allegation that Kamala engaged in non-consensual sex or abused a position of power to get sex. So, I don’t think your point holds together very well to the extent you are saying that her sex life is equivalent to Trump’s. Again, paying off porn stars while President and bragging about sexual assault, versus a consensual relationship from 20 years ago. Not quite the same. Though, I would happily return to the days when all the press knew that Kennedy and Eisenhower were fucking around, but it was treated as nobody’s business. And, let’s be honest, that remained pretty much the rule right up until the Republicans decided to turn Presidential sexual behavior into a partisan blood sport with Clinton. Not sure that worked out so well for them, given the sheer amount of pervy conduct from those upright fundamentalist Christian senators, congressmen and governors, but maybe one good thing about the Trump era is it may have truly gotten rid of a lot of the salacious sensitivity around Presidential sexcapades, though somehow I doubt it.

    2. Don't know why you brought up Kamala but be that as it may both Monica and Stormy were consensual with attempted cover ups. Wrong is wrong and when you start trying to assign degrees it's just to make one side or another fell better. I completely disagree with you about proper investigation on the Biden allegations that's like saying Hillary was properly investigated.
All that being said I am not defending Trump but saying we are again in the position of trying to pick the lesser of 2 evils. The arrogant so and so or the one who can not put 2 coherent thoughts together.

    3. The arrogant so and so can't put 2 coherent thoughts together.

    4. Yeah, that's another line that seems to appeal to Trump voters -- that Biden is the one who has problems speaking and thinking. Did you watch your guy's Axios interview? His interview with Chris Wallace? His Covid press briefings? The guy can't even read or say the word Yosemite without bungling it. You really think that being able to put thoughts together coherently and well crafted speech making are selling points for Trump? Don't think so.

  5. Joe2 here,

A big problem Harris has is that she said that she thought Biden was a racist and she believed the Congressional Staffer's accusation. So either she lied then or it doesn't matter to her now.

I think most people are going to vote for the person that will push for those things that they consider most important (regardless of the degrees of scandal). Many people vote don't vote for a candidate, rather they vote against the other candidate.

    1. That's not quite right. She said she believed the accusers who said he did things that made them feel uncomfortable. She specifically said in the debate that she did *not* believe he is a racist. What she said was she did not like that he talked about his work across the aisle with certain Republicans who *were* racists, and she didn't like his opposition to busing. I agree the first is a problem for her, though I think the R's are again engaging in wishful thinking if they think sexual assault and infidelity attacks are a winning play for Trump.

    2. Dan you are correct in that she did not say, "you are a racist..," But I believe she did do the political equivalent, e.g. "I do not believe you are a racist, but..." For those interested here is the clip: https://youtu.be/J1OvDB_wavI

On another note, the people he worked with to prevent busing were mostly Democrats, e.g. Sens. James Eastland and Herman Talmadge. But he did work with Senator Helms, a Republican, on the issue.

    1. Like I said, she is a great pick to make people who were already going to vote for Biden happy. Unfortunately, Trump can still win in the electoral college like last time if swing voters don't feel the same way you do. And I'm thinking they may not.

  7. You should at least comfort yourself that he didn't pick a sycophant idiot like Mike Pence. What he picked was an institutionalist... someone that is going to work from inside the system. Thank goodness.

    1. What works for Trump versus what may or may not work for Biden are sadly, but obviously very different things. In this case, Trump won WITH Pence as his VP. Being a sycophant idiot, while true, did nothing to deter Trump's victory.

  9. Hello,
I'm curious about the nickname given to Kamala Harris ("Heels up Harris") and I can't find any information on this subject in the French press.
Are the people she is supposed to have "kneeled" before known? Or does it have nothing to do with it?
Does this nickname have anything to do with the fact that she wears sneakers?
    Thank you

    1. I had not heard that particular appellation before, but I assume it is a reference to the fact that she dated the then mayor of San Francisco--like 20+ years ago--and there is, therefore, a suggestion she slept her way to the top. Of course, a younger woman dating Willie Brown was not exactly a rare event, so the people who like pushing the "slept her way to the top" line might want to address how she became a US Senator and VP candidate, while no one can name any of the other women Willie Brown purportedly fucked.

  10. Well...

Shilo's theory (and kind of mine as well) is that as someone who lives in California our vote doesn't "count" as much when it comes to President. You're on the East Coast, so your vote is more important according to theory.

I was pleasantly surprised by Harris but mostly because of her more conservative views (She was a Prosecutor) than some of the others. Still, her youthful energy is a plus as far as I'm concerned.

I'm really curious about what specifically about Harris you object to.
